Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge certain decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
