Trump's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. During this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
