Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.

No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
