Conservative responses to the limited disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others expressed frustration over how heavy redactions portray former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt serious concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans immediately called for greater transparency.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
Some Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Release
However, some rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their identities obscured.
But a few do not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, allowed some conservative voices to launch the offensive.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding these documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted
Nonetheless, broader discourse on the political right was relatively subdued after the release, particularly when compared with the loud demands for transparency that came before the legislative vote to enact a law mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a full release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were given physical binders of files that included little previously unseen data.
