EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
