Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had let in ten goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or was there ever a thread keeping it intact from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, but then he publicly stated that the club had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Speculation that he could resign were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio became as messy in their performances as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Presence

One individual remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this year. He completed last season with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his parent club were pushing for him to extend his stay a while longer. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to reduce their roster without replacements.

He signed originally when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was still trying to determine the nature of the player's talent. Labeled as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
