At least thirteen people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.

The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
